Knowing who a horse is, where it comes from and which breed it belongs to: that is what identification is all about. In Morocco, the system is run by SOREC. Here is how it works.
Faras, the register of Morocco’s horses
Breeding operations and births are recorded in a system that lists all the horses of Morocco: SOREC’s Faras application. Every step, from covering to birth, is logged there.
The identification document
From this information, an identification document is issued for each horse and stays with it throughout its life. It is on the basis of this document that a horse can take part in the equestrian disciplines it is eligible for.
The stud-book, the breed’s official register
Every horse is registered in a breed stud-book, the official register that guarantees its ancestry. Registration follows national or international rules depending on the breed: it is the stud-book that establishes whether a horse is a Barb, an Arab-Barb or a Purebred Arabian.
For breeders: declare every step
- declare coverings or inseminations during the breeding season;
- declare the foal’s birth;
- keep the identification document with the horse;
- report any changes concerning it, in line with SOREC’s rules.

For buyers: what to check
- that the horse matches the description in the document: colour, markings, age;
- its stud-book registration and ancestry;
- that the advertised pedigree matches the papers;
- its health record with the vet.
If in doubt, SOREC remains the reference point.
